Under California Labor Code § 512(a), an employer must provide a thirty minute meal break to employees who work more than five hours per day and a second thirty minute meal break to those working more than ten hours per day. This statute also mandates a ten minute rest break every four hours or fraction thereof worked. Not abiding by this law can result in potentially costly lawsuits for any California business.
For this reason, at California Bank & Trust offices, they use the banner feature of TC-1. This is a streaming message on their TC-1 clock that serves as a reminder for their employees to take their required lunch/rest breaks. In fact, their message reads,
